Allotment gardening and ecosystem services in the town of České Budějovice

Diploma thesis: Allotment gardening and ecosystem services in the town of České Budějovice is consist from literary research, methodology and subsequent evaluation of the questionnaire survey. In the introduction are explain important concepts - Allotment gardening, history of allotment gardening in Czech Republic and ecosystems services in relation to allotment gardening. The research was conducted by questionnaire survey. This questionnaire was provide for voluntary completion to 53 respondents from allotment gardening in cadastral territory of České Budějovice (area of Husova kolonie and České Vrbné). Short form of questionnaire focused on respondents without garden filled 20 respondents. Results of the work is analysis and evaluation of all answers on questionnaire questions from perspective of ecosystems services describes in literary research. According simple question in research data shows that: - 86, 7 % gardeners perceives garden like a source of fresh vegetable and fruit. - 85 % gardeners have garden like a relaxing space. - 100 % gardeners have compost. - 94 % gardeners captures rain water. - 71 % gardeners grows some different variants of low trees. Conclusion: From results we can deduct that people use this space mainly for drawing on cultural services of ecosystems (relaxing, social interaction..). Vegetable and fruit supply is according gardeners minor reason for gardening. Vegetable and fruit is understood like bonus for relaxing work at garden.
Valuation of ecosystem services on example of river alluvial land

In the first decade of 21st century the concept of ecosystem services became one of the most frequently used, especially in interdisciplinary research activities tied with the Earth and life sciences. However, only slightly this concept penetrated into the real advanced market economies that consume decisive part of world natural resources and ecosystem services. In this paper the causes of current unsatisfactory situation in ecosystem service values implementation are analyzed, main valuation methods are described and specified on example of ecosystem services of river alluvial land. Two ecosystem methods developed in the CR are presented.
Dialogue between ecologists and water managers - analyses

The dialogue between ecologists and water managers in the Czech Republic is analysed. The benefit of this dialogue reflects the need of harmonizing the usual tasks of water management with potential risks of global climate change and permanent threatening of biodiversity. The obstacles of the dialogue are of different character and are listed as follows: 1.Different area and time scale of responsibilities. 2. Difficult harmonization of technique and nature, 3. Different ethical concepts, dealing with the role and position of human in the nature, 4. Different understanding of water cycle 5. Insufitient quantification of some aspects of water cycle 6. Fear of autonomous decisions, resulting in need of very complex and uneffective law system 7. Psychological barriers in initialization of multidisciplinary dialog and teams. 8. Lobbying and corruption. As one of the possible tools to overcame some of the barriers, the concept of ecosystem services is presented.
Ecosystem services of a floodplain

Natural segments of river floodplains have preserved the ability to provide a scale of ecosystem services. The aim of this study is to evaluate in a monetary way the selected ecosystem services of a natural segment of river Lužnice floodplain, Czech republic, based on the analysis and quantification of ecosystem processes and structures. Evaluated services are flood protection, carbon sequestration, biodiversity refugium and production of hay, wood and fish.
